Course Description

Supplementary topics on antenna and array technology. Propagation in presence of Earth. Oblique incidence, Fresnel theory, Brewster angle. Sommerfeld-Norton theory for space- and surface-waves. Curvature and rough-Earth effects. Elevated antennas, optical horizon. Tropospheric waves. Orbit curvature, atmosphere prototype, Earth effective radius. Plasma and ionosphere. Plasma dielectric constant and conductivity. Ionospheric reflection, diffraction, attenuation. Frequency selection. Electromagnetic wave propagation in troposphere. Fading due to atmospheric precipitation. Microwave link design. Determination of linear antenna current: Hallen’s and Pocklington’s integral equations and solution by Moment Methods.
